Hey guyssss! Welcome back to my blog!!!!! Excited much? Okayyyy, let's get on to the blogpost!
Theodore Finch-- a suicide who's on the verge of killing himself from a bell tower decided to live when something magnificent happened. Violet happened. All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven is a breath-taking book that surprises you at any given moment. She wrote this story mainly because her grandfather died because he shot himself (not knowing if it was incidental or accidental) before she was born, which is pretty disheartening. Furthermore, the boy she loved died because of suicide. And I thought this book has loads of useful informations about suicide fused into the book.
This book is narrated by two very different people-- Theodore Finch, who lived a miserable life without a father who left his family for another woman; and Violet Markey, who lived an awesome life, being the famous kid in school, everything was awesome up until the point when her sister died in a car crash on "A Street Bridge".
Anyways, the book started off with these two people on the top of a bell tower, willing to kill themselves when surprise surprise, one of them prevented the other from falling off the bell tower. They didn't know each other, and had nothing in common except for the fact that they have geography class together, and that's where they both got closer when they were assigned a group project to document their city.
This documentation brought them closer as they have to wander around their place. Wandering requires a transportation, and what's more convenient to drive with than a car? Am I right? But the main problem is that Violet is really scared of cars since her sister-- Eleanor died in a car.
Being the great person Theodore is, he persuaded and sorta-kinda-maybe forced Violet to ride a car. He succeeded. It was a great thing, and it made her parents approve the both of them to be a couple. Long after being a couple, they got into a mini fight which causes Theodore to go missing for weeks. No one was worried, even his mom wasn't worried. Only one person did. Violet Markey. Everyone thought it was Theodore's usual thing to do-- to move out of the house for weeks. But Violet Markey doesn't think so. And that's why she went on a manhunt.
She looked everywhere, followed the clues he left for her. All that hard effort only to find out that he drowned himself. A funeral was held to commemorate his death. It was really sorrowful, and I could really feel Violet's sadness through the series of words that I scanned through.
Overall, this book was very entertaining and have suuuuper relatable/realistic characters. The amount of information was in an abundance. If I were to rate this book, I'd give it a 9.5/10. It was the greatest read I've had so far.
XOXO,
Jen
